Lighting Industry Product Development and Management
The development in technology has seen the lighting industry develop state-of-the art lighting products to enhance the livelihood most people of especially in their homes and place of work. Lighting industry players are ever in the lookout for new developments in this sector. They are working tooth and nail to ensure that they develop smart lighting systems that can meet people’s lighting needs in this digital era.
As technology progresses, most of the current incandescent light bulbs are nearly becoming obsolete. There are two upcoming lighting technologies that are poised to replace incandescent light bulbs the soonest and these are light emitting diodes (LEDs) and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). In the last few years, LED technology have experienced impressive gains which have seen a great improvement in the effectiveness of LED lighting products.
There is a compelling need for lighting industry players to take initiatives in research in lighting research and development. This will help them determine key areas that need a lot of improvement in order for their technologies to keep in tandem with the ever progressing technology. Most of the key areas that need improvement include; advanced packaging, color stability, product reliability and lifetime, power supplies, and value addition.
It’s common knowledge that if lighting industry players particularly in LED technology put more capabilities in packaging, they are most likely to create cost effective lighting fixtures. Replacing the functionality in LED luminaire and then embedding it with a chip would allow it to be more cost effective and much more effectual. More development needs to be done on shifting the current packaging architecture to chip level.
There is need to shift LED power supplies from the conventional fragile components such as electrolytic capacitors to more robust GaN-based power electronics that are smaller, cheaper and efficient. Basing more research and development on the reliability of individual parts and testing their lifetime would be more beneficial. The lighting industry key players must take more emphasis on the evolution of further lighting metrics which may forecast and detect failures which might occur in the lighting fixtures. They should also develop products that are powers surge resistant so as to avoid the abnormalities that are caused by such surges.
Color shift in lighting systems has been a large issue in the lighting technology. There is need for the lighting industry to develop product with color stability, is reliable and longer-lasting. There’s more that should be done in order to have an extensive understanding of the very acceptable color changes and mechanisms in lighting.
With all these in mind, most lighting companies can develop products that meet the current needs in lighting technology. Therefore, product development and management should take center stage in lighting companies if they ever want to keep in line with the ever improving technology.
